Biden had (and has) spinal arthritis, peripheral neuropathy (both linked to a previous car accident, and affecting his gait, making him physically look frail), and his speech impairment is back, in part. He is also ranked by all nonpartisan studies near the top of all US presidents, and Trump (first term) near the bottom, in terms of achievements. Biden could sit in a wheelchair and he'd still totally outperform Trump.

And Biden has a moral spine of steel. Trump has none.

I wasn’t aware of President Biden’s other medical problems, but they mesh perfectly with my conviction that he quietly overworked himself, while verbose Trump basked in his accustomed attention from the supine legacy media. Biden tried to pack in as many projects benefitting We The People as possible, knowing he wouldn’t get another term. Biden did much, said little. Trump talked constantly, narcotizing MAGA and the media, while doing nothing constructive and much that was destructive during the presidency of a man he’s still trying to annihilate. Trump is unbowed by the burden of grief Biden carries, feeling the pain of others whom Trump ignores. I devoutly, unapologetically wish great pain and loss upon Trump. He’s gotten a worldwide taste of something trivial, and he simply cannot believe this is happening to him. Taco taco taco.

You have summed up both men. Biden, a man born with a speech impediment that he tirelessly tried to overcome along with his sometimes obvious pain when he walked, but always with a smile and because he was having trouble hearing he leaned forward to try his best whereas the current president used a phony bone spurs excuse to avoid the draft while he spends hours on the golf course or he stands up for his 2 hour speeches (unintelligible). You know, the speeches that people have been seen walking out on so much so that his team now locks the doors. Biden’s speeches were much shorter and coherent and especially uplifting in the end of each speech he would say “God bless our troops…and God bless America…”

I’m close to tears today, Timothy, and your post pushed me over again, thinking about President Biden’s gallantry, courage, and kindness. I’d just mopped up from a restorative weep to, “It’s Quiet Uptown,” from “Hamilton.”

Many thanks Leslie. I have been a consummate advocate for Democracy. I really had my start in college in Washington, D.C. I could walk out my door on G Street just a few blocks from the West Wing and get inspired. Back in the’70s D.C was civil. Respect between parties was everywhere. I don’t even recognize it today. I’m sorry to rant but I have a stake in this country. I believe in the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution and I don’t want them stomped on by a would be autocratic! I bet Trump wouldn’t go see “Hamilton” and if he did he’d never understand the meaning behind it

And thank you, President Biden was there in the Senate when I was in school over 50 years ago. His undying passion and commitment to America was and still is amazing. How he must be still going out meeting with people is nothing short of inspiring. I had Prostate Cancer over 15 years ago and I have been diagnosed with cancer again. President Biden amazes my with his passion through all he is going through. If ever there was someone who gave a prize for the sincere love of the ideals that make up the real American Man of the People it surely would be awarded to him!

I only disagree with your last two sentences. People who behave and talk like Trump are profoundly broken people. More misery (contrary to Biden, who had a pretty fantastic father with a strong moral compass, Trump suffered severe abuse as a child - just like Musk and Vance) will only make things worse. What he needs is to be immersed in a social environment with strong moral values for a long time, so that people can teach him basic emotional intelligence tools. It will make him and the entire world happier.

His niece has stated that he has learning difficulties…he probably has dyslexia so he has trouble reading…which probably frustrates…but again he has had the resources to get him. He grew up with a narcissistic father & a mom who was ill. Other kids have had worse & have overcome their abuse & aren’t like him. He chooses to be cruel, evil, & hate all humanity. He’s mentally unstable & should be taken out of office, as is Vance, Musk, Theil…all these guys have a screw lose!

Too easy.

How do you know that, contrary to those who suffered from childhood trauma and were able to use it to become wiser and more compassionate adults, Trump had access to all these same tools?

You could as well argue that, since he clearly got stuck in an extremely selfish and dark worldview, that, in and of itself, proves that he wasn't fortunate enough to have encountered circumstances that would have allowed him to get more connected to reality as it is... .

No one deliberately decides to suffer more, once you notice that there IS a way out...

His miserable, abusive childhood did indeed damage him. And yet…as with millions of kids who had terrible childhoods, adult Donald had a choice to seek help. That’s what therapists and psychiatrists do. They help people who have been broken. He had the money, he had other family members, and he maybe even had some friends who wanted to intervene on his behalf. He chose to take the lowest road. And, then, to compound his poor decision, he chose to inflict America with his craven, cruel and corrupt personality.

With higher education scandalously expensive and the GOP having created a highly sophisticated, neofascist propaganda machine, I'm not so sure that MAGA voters are all "stupid".

It will be up to US to inform them - as is actually always the case, in a thriving democracy, or whenever democracy is being threatened by a fascist power grab.

And then there is the impact of social media, especially on young people... . We know that it increases negative emotions, reduces empathy, and makes our minds more agitated and restless, with shorter and shorter attention spans...

At the same time, I'm quite sure that you ARE not a stupid person. You will continue to get fooled by him as long as you don't start fact-checking him though...

especially trump voters that are first time R voters after being lifelong dems - like the black women in chicago, baltimore, the bronx, philly, etc etc etc - they’re being fooled too?

and muslims in michigan - fooled too? and the asians in virginia? fooled again? and all the hispanic and black men? and men and esp young men and gen z? all fools? by one guy?

wow, that trump is something else huh?

If yes: two thirds of this country don't support Trump and his neofascist GOP, so there you have all the proof you claim to need to see that he's lying all the time.

In case you are willing to face the truth, let's just go with his Big Beautiful Bill. He promised not to cut Medicaid. It contains the biggest Medicaid cut EVER. See? That's what is meant by "lying" to his own "basement dwellers" (= how he himself calls his own voters, in private)/

Expand full comment
EUWDTB's avatar

That's precisely how the right went into overdrive. After FDR, neoliberalism was invented as a rejection of the New Deal by savage capitalists. We saw the same backlash from the same people happening already at the beginning of Obama's first term, and then again under Biden.

Each time the left succeeds in doing something serious for the 99%, the right becomes scared and wants fascism more than ever before, so it starts spreading lies more than ever before.

For more info about this, see Quinn Slobodian's "Crack-up Capitalism" or George Monbiot's latest book.

Trump is able to read. He reads from a teleprompter with no problems other than a rather mechanical delivery and a tendency to get so bored with reading prepared words that he decides to go off script. The most recent example of this was his graduation speech at West Point last month. The problem appears to be that he just doesn’t like to read, which isn’t at all the same thing as being incapable of reading.

Expand full comment
Keri Riddle's avatar

He is capable of the mechanics of reading. He however doesn’t fully grasp language. (And I don’t mean English versus Spanish). His vocabulary development is like that of a 4th grader. His knowledge and use of syntax and semantics demonstrates a language delay. (I’m a retired Speech-Language Pathologist so my bailiwick). It’s pathetic.

Drumpf doesn't care, he only wanted to be President to keep from going to prison. He may, or may not, get his wish. The real drivers of the Drumpf administration policy is Peter Theil and the Project 2025 cabal. Drumpf might agree with some of what Theil wants but is delusional if he thinks that he or his idiot sons will have a role in Theil's ultimate goal of creating a techno-oligarcy from the bones of the collapsed United States.
