Driving across the border to get gas and go shopping used to be a normal and very common thing. Not anymore. The US border patrol has set up a preliminary checkpoint south of several of the main border crossings- trucks parked across the road with aggressive guards more than happy to pull cars apart and detain people returning to Canada. There are multiple stories of innocent, casual Canadian visitors being held in custody for hours or even days. Going to the States is no longer a casual drive. It has become a risky trek into potentially dangerous territory.
I feel sorry for the border towns with their great shops, attractions and picnic sites. I miss the friendly border guards who smiled and waved us on for years but this is the new reality and no cheap gas can make that trip worth the risk anymore.

While it is true that Canadians are voicing their political opinions by avoiding the US border, there is MUCH more to it than that.
Driving across the border to get gas and go shopping used to be a normal and very common thing. Not anymore. The US border patrol has set up a preliminary checkpoint south of several of the main border crossings- trucks parked across the road with aggressive guards more than happy to pull cars apart and detain people returning to Canada. There are multiple stories of innocent, casual Canadian visitors being held in custody for hours or even days. Going to the States is no longer a casual drive. It has become a risky trek into potentially dangerous territory.
I feel sorry for the border towns with their great shops, attractions and picnic sites. I miss the friendly border guards who smiled and waved us on for years but this is the new reality and no cheap gas can make that trip worth the risk anymore.

Well, maybe - but there are a lot fewer guns in Canada, and the police are not militarized like they are here. If you lose your job here, you lose your healthcare. So, yeah, if we could be reasonably sure we wouldn’t be mowed down on the steps of the capitol or lose our jobs, we’d be more likely to do something like that. But if 30% of the country is not behind you, and you’re outgunned, it’s not a winning strategy.
There are problems with the "storm the Capitol" idea. First, it was done by MAGAs on January 6, 2021. They were trying to overthrow the Biden-Harris government and install Trump. The failed.
Second, as the aforementioned insurrection indicates, MAGAs are not people who believe in the rule of law, nor truth, justice, or any other virtues that used to be taken for granted. I won't say Democrats would never storm the Capitol, but things would have to be very dire indeed before such a thing would happen.
