Trump Just Fell for Zohran Mamdani and the Right Is Losing It
I just watched one of the strangest scenes of this entire presidency. Donald Trump met with New York City mayor elect Zohran Mamdani for thirty minutes behind closed doors and then walked out acting like the guy had converted him. Trump glazed this man on camera. The same Zohran Mamdani that MAGA has spent months calling a communist suddenly became Trump’s newest political crush. And the meltdown on the right is already incredible.
None of this shocked me. Mamdani did not win because he sold anyone a fantasy. He won because people my age and the generations around me were crushed by the Republican party’s economic worldview. Decades of trickle down policy left young voters with no affordable housing, no hope of ownership, barely any savings, and a lifetime of medical or student debt. If you do not have a stake in the system, you do not feel loyal to it. You start looking for someone who actually talks about what you face every day. Mamdani does that. Trump does not, but Trump is always weak to someone with charisma and confidence behind closed doors.
When the cameras turned on, Trump could not stop praising him. He rambled about housing, groceries, utilities, the cost of oil, and affordability like Mamdani had personally rewritten his worldview on the spot. He loves people he thinks are winners and he loves people who present warmly. It is his simplest instinct and he fell into it again. Mamdani just stood there watching Trump talk himself into a partnership.
Then came the awkward moment when a reporter asked Trump why he had previously called Mamdani a communist. Trump shrugged and said people change. This is the same guy who used that exact word to terrify his base for years. Suddenly it was no big deal. Another reporter asked Mamdani if he still believes Trump is a fascist. Mamdani responded diplomatically. Trump cut in and basically said he could just say yes. I swear to you I had to pause the clip. Either Trump does not understand the weight of the word or he accidentally conceded the point. Both possibilities are hilarious.
The best part was watching conservative reporters try to stir a fight. Every question was framed like they were desperate to watch Mamdani and Trump claw at each other. Neither one took the bait. Trump kept returning to affordability, rent, groceries, and cost of living. Mamdani kept talking about lifting up New Yorkers who have been pushed to the margins. The entire vibe was two people who quietly knew they had overlapping constituencies even if their ideologies are worlds apart.
This is the real reason MAGA is losing their minds. They spent months saying Mamdani would ruin New York, that he was dangerous, that Trump would destroy him. Instead Trump walked out saying he feels comfortable living under a Mamdani administration and wants to help him succeed. Trump even said they agree on more than he expected. That line alone is enough to send every conservative influencer into a rage spiral.
Populism on the left and popululism on the right often overlap because both sides tap into the frustration of people who have been ignored by traditional politics. That is why you saw Bernie Sanders voters swing to Trump in past cycles. That is why Mamdani picked up Trump voters this time. People want someone who listens to their lived economic reality instead of lecturing them about what they should care about.
And to be honest, this is exactly how I expected this meeting to go. I said last night that Trump would fold. Mamdani has a uniquely warm and convincing presence. Even when I am unsure about the specifics of a policy, he presents it in a way that draws you in. Trump has always melted for people like that. He did it with foreign leaders. He did it with CEOs. He just did it with the next mayor of New York City.
It will not stay this cozy forever. Mamdani is not even in office yet and the moment real choices need to be made, the tension will show. But what happened today is proof that younger voters are done with the economic games both parties have played for decades. People want affordability. They want real stability. They want the basics of life to stop spiraling out of reach. Trump knows that message is powerful. He just met someone who communicates it better than he does.

Adam, I appreciate your analysis. Keep up the good work. Legacy media does not meet my expectations anymore and I appreciate the young people who are doing the work.
The world knows what a coward Pudding Pants is.
This closed door meeting went exactly how I thought it might.
