Trump Freezes Medicaid in Some States
Don’t get pulled in by their distractions, this is the real deal
I got a first hand look at how governors and lawmakers were blindsided by Donald Trump’s decision to unilaterally freeze almost all federal grants and loans in the middle of the night, causing widespread disruptions and bipartisan angst.
“This will backfire spectacularly”, says Hawaii’s Sen. Brian Schatz, looking visibly shaken while talking to me about Trump’s midnight stunt in an interview today.
This election was largely a referendum on the media ecosystem that Americans live in. After decades of relying on legacy media outlets like CNN and MSNBC, democratic officials are now using new and independent media platforms to connect with wider audiences. Simultaneously, I’ve been using this shift as an opportunity to take on as many interviews as possible… and in this one, I noticed the Senator seemed uniquely disturbed.
“It’s flat illegal. Congress decides on spending, then the executive branch is supposed to execute the laws that we pass, so it's illegal and I do believe it'll be overturned in court but the idea is to cause pain and chaos in the meantime.
The senator then gets a text on his phone in the middle of our interview.
“I just got a text from a colleague that said that the governor of their state is locked out of the Medicaid portal and the Head Start portal”, the Senator said.
A top aide to Illinois Governor JB Pritzker was the first to report difficulties accessing critical websites necessary for Medicaid operations. Similarly, Illinois state agencies began encountering problems with federal funding platforms, including those used for managing Medicaid disbursements.
“This thing is like a full authoritarian move, and I think it will get bounced in federal court within a couple of days, but in the meantime, you know, we are trying to see whether there are Republicans who think Congress should not be completely eviscerated.” he continued.
“Lots and lots of people receive federal grants, and this isn't just non-profity grants: grants are medicaid, grants are nursing homes, grants are public education. So this is a freeze on all federal spending except for social security and a couple of other things. This will impact people by the end of tomorrow. It will backfire spectacularly, and I can tell you that democrats are too a person pissed off and ready to take collective action.”
The republicans want us to get tired with exhaustion 😩 with all these illegal maneuvering they've been doing all week. I admit it. It is thoroughly exhausting. But we can not let them win! Because this is exactly what they want. Flood the system with unconstitutional and illegal moves to get the masses freaked out and then they'll submit. The wasteful spending are the Senator’s salaries and pensions. Musk’s government contracts to play with rocket ships. The cost of repairs to the Capital after the violent attack on J6. Additional tax cuts to the oligarchs in this country. These cuts are vindictive.
