The reason the story is where it is has to do with the discussion regarding Drumpf’s possible use of the US military to remain in power come what may. In principle they would not intervene. But that’s far from a certainty.
My story does not offer a clear resolution of the question. No one still living is likely to discuss Nixon’s meeting that night, likely some don’t even recall it. What we can say is that in fact the President of the US did resign after that meeting. He made no further attempt to remain in power.
