While Trump played empire-builder with no plan, France quietly closed a deal the U.S. never stood a chance of getting

You can only act like a bully with no plan for so long before the world stops taking your calls. And that’s exactly what just happened to Donald Trump.

After years of trying to intimidate Greenland into a mining deal (remember the “I want to buy Greenland” stunt?), the country has finally signed a 30-year minerals agreement. But not with the United States. They signed with a French firm.

Why? Because the French didn’t come in like imperial clowns. They came in with a strategy. A real one. They did the boring but essential work: drafting a detailed proposal, following Greenland’s laws, and treating the process with respect. They didn’t posture for the cameras. They negotiated.

Trump had none of that. No plan. No respect. No working knowledge of diplomacy. Just a handful of slogans and a desire to bully a sovereign nation into submission.

And yes, some of his supporters will say “he thinks outside the box.” Fine. But maybe it’s time to think back inside the box. Because inside the box is where actual deals happen. Inside the box is where you have allies. Inside the box is where global partnerships are built, not broken.

We can’t keep doing this. We can’t keep watching the same tired ritual where Trump alienates entire countries, whether in the Oval Office or on social media, and then expects them to still work with us like nothing happened. It’s embarrassing. And it’s costing us.

So, to Donald Trump: Please think back inside the box.
